Case Study: Beckman in Fullerton, CA

Beckman, located in Fullerton, CA, is a prominent site consisting of seven concrete tilt-up buildings. The project aimed to enhance the building’s entryways using advanced technology and premium materials.

Architectural composite metal (A.C.M) panels were chosen for installation at the building entrances, making the facility more appealing and functional.

Project Challenges

  • Complex Building Design: The entryways of the buildings required precise installation of A.C.M panels to ensure the architectural vision was met. The design of the panels had to account for the curvature and contours of the structures.

  • Accurate Panel Layout: The layout of the panels was crucial to achieve uniformity across the multiple buildings while maintaining design integrity.

Technological Approach

The team employed a 3D laser scan of the buildings’ exteriors to ensure accuracy and efficiency. This technology allowed the team to:

  • Create a precise digital model of the entryways, identifying optimal panel placements before installation.
  • Minimize the risk of human error, ensuring that panel measurements and alignments were accurate.

The 3D laser scan was pivotal in formulating the layout for the A.C.M panels, leading to a streamlined installation process.

Materials Used

The project utilized 4mm F.R. (Fire Retardant) A.C.M panels for aesthetic appeal and safety. These panels were installed at the canopies of the building entrances, contributing to the structure’s sleek and modern appearance.

Installation Process

  • Hat Channel System: The A.C.M panels were installed on a pre-set hat channel, which served as a supportive frame for the panels.

  • Caulking and Finishing: After installation, the joints between the panels were meticulously caulked to ensure seamless integration and prevent moisture intrusion.

Outcome

The project successfully transformed the entryways of Beckman’s seven buildings with high-quality A.C.M panels. The use of 3D laser scanning technology ensured precision and efficiency throughout the installation, resulting in:

  • Enhanced building aesthetics.
  • Uniform panel installation across all buildings.
  • Improved durability and weather resistance due to high-quality materials and precise caulking.

Conclusion

The Beckman project in Fullerton, CA, showcases the seamless integration of advanced technology and superior materials in modern construction. The ASM team delivered a high-quality finish that will endure the elements and last for a long time.
